OCR 'Mrs.Ahrcns' kept verbatim (misprint of 'Ahrens'). Best evidence found for this marriage: a contemporary paper naming her by the married title — not a marriage registration. NSW BDM's online marriage index was searched by Chrome this run (groom AHRENS Edward Clifton, bride SCOTTER Gertrude Lillian), both narrowly (1932-1936) and broadly (1925-1940), and returned a genuine, controlled 'No Matching Records found' both times. unionType is left as 'married' on the strength of this evidence and the two children; no MARR event is added since no date or place is attested anywhere.

Finch and the Beadmans are the William Finch and Teresa Beadman named as Jane Sarah's siblings in her own 1933 notice; by 1911 her sister Harriet had been dead 32 years, so the brother-in-law relationship runs through Jane Sarah. Cited on the family because it is the evidence that the union was recognised as a marriage — no NSW marriage registration has been found for them.

The second is the discriminator this whole identification rests on: Mr and Mrs John Grenenger — John August Grenenger #82881 and Margaret #82882, married in 1896 — bury Julia Sullivan as their SISTER from her father's house. Read with the death notice two days later, it makes Michael and Julia Sullivan of Lily Street, Enfield, Margaret's parents.

Cited on the family because 'relict of the late Michael Sullivan' is a record naming the marriage, which is what the union type needs before it can move from unknown to married. No marriage registration has been found: not in the NSW index 1850-1875, and not in the FamilySearch Irish indexes, where the couple's marriage of about 1862-63 does not appear. The Caheragh marriage register on registers.nli.ie is the place to look.

Cited on the family for the BIRTH ORDER, which is a question about the whole sibling set rather than about any one child. Two notices count the daughters. This one makes Hannah (Johanna, born 22 September 1866) the SECOND daughter; the 1908 notice makes Julia (born 1880 at Newtown) the FIFTH. The known daughters in order are Mary 1864, Bridget 1865, Johanna 1866, Margaret 1868, then Julia 1880. Both counts can only be true together if MARY, born 12 April 1864, was already dead when the family counted — which would make Bridget first, Johanna second, Margaret third — AND if a fourth daughter was born between Margaret in 1868 and Julia in 1880, which is where Ellen fits. NOTHING IS ASSERTED FROM THIS: Mary #83050 keeps no death, and Ellen is given no birth. It is written down because it is the arithmetic that a Caheragh burial register or an Irish civil death registration for Mary would confirm or destroy, and because it predicts an 1869-1879 baptism for Ellen that the Caheragh register should hold.

The two notices that count the daughters, quoted as the Trove OCR stands and separated by ||. THIS NOTE REVISES the birth-order note on my proposal 2339 and should be preferred over it. The daughters in order of birth are Mary (12 Apr 1864), Bridget (29 Aug 1865), Johanna/Hannah (22 Sep 1866), Margaret (1868), then Julia (1880) and Lucy A (1882). Hannah is called the SECOND daughter and Julia the FIFTH. Taken at face value Hannah is third and Julia fifth only if no daughter was born between 1868 and 1880 — the two counts cannot both be satisfied by the children we have. Two readings fix it, and each needs one daughter to have died before the family started counting, plus a FOURTH daughter born between Margaret in 1868 and Julia in 1880. (A) MARY died as an infant: then Bridget is first, Hannah second, Margaret third, the unknown fourth, Julia fifth. (B) BRIDGET died as an infant: then Mary is first, Hannah second, and the rest the same. Reading B was not visible before this search and is now the more economical of the two, because MARY has a candidate death registration in 1889 that reading A has to throw away, while Bridget is the one child of this family with NO civil registration at all — only a Caheragh baptism — which is a weak but real hint of a short life. NOTHING IS ASSERTED: neither Mary #83050 nor Bridget #83051 is given a death here. What settles it is the Caheragh register — a burial for either girl — or an Irish civil death registration in the Skibbereen district 1864-1875. Either reading requires a daughter born about 1869-1879, which is where Ellen, whom the 1917 probate and the 1941 and 1946 notices all name, belongs.

Read by me from the clipping of the 1886 funeral notices (media 386). James Beadman calls Samuel Finch his father-in-law and Samuel's sons call Beadman their brother-in-law in the notice printed beside it, so Beadman had married a daughter of Samuel Finch; the cemetery index says which one, giving Theresa Ada Finch as 'w/James'. Jane Sarah Grenenger's 1933 death notice names 'Teresa Beadman' as her sister. No marriage registration has been looked for: the NSW marriage index needs a browser.

An In Memoriam placed on the second anniversary of Harriett Maria Crossingham's death - 'August 2' against the headstone's August 23 is a typesetting slip, the notice having run on 23 August 1910. It is the reason this marriage was looked for: a daughter of Harriett Maria signing herself Harriett Worth in 1910, twenty-six years after the registration above. 'Manning River papers please copy' says she was no longer living on the Manning.
