Volunteer transcription of the baptism, marriage and burial registers of Barkway St Mary Magdalene, searched at freereg.org.uk. Created WITHOUT a url: FreeREG's single site address is already the identity of source 1531, so a per-parish row carrying it would collapse into that parish. Each citation carries the record page's own permalink instead. Transcribers are named on every record page and are quoted in the raw.

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) · Anglican · Barkway, Hertfordshire, England

For “Born” ABT 1814 of William Stacey

Baptism date 18 Sep 1814, entry 35, Barkway St Mary Magdalene

Baptism (18 Sep 1814), the 1871 census age (56, i.e. b. c.1814-15) and the 1874 burial age (60, i.e. b. c.1813-14) all point to 1814, not the previously recorded ABT 1815 which put his baptism before his birth. Corrected to ABT 1814 to match the already-cited evidence.

The single most useful record on this line: it names the bride's surname, both fathers and both fathers' trades, and it puts the bride at Newsells, the hamlet her daughter Fanny Elizabeth gave as her own birthplace in 1871. Identity is not in doubt - a blacksmith William Stacey of Barkway marrying a Charlotte in December 1841, whose children are then baptised at Barkway to William, blacksmith, and Charlotte from December 1842 on.

Two quoted fragments, separated by a double semicolon: the father's-occupation field of the Barkway baptisms of his children William (18 Sep 1814, entry 35), Susan (2 Apr 1820, entry 193) and Emma (19 Sep 1824, entry 363), all reading Labourer; and the groom's-father block of his son William's marriage entry of 23 December 1841 (entry 20), reading Blacksmith.

FreeREG record page, quoted field by field in the page's own order. The age of 51 gives his ABT 1788 birth. He is the only Richard Stacey buried at Barkway, and his death two years before his son's marriage explains nothing unusual - marriage registers name a father whether living or dead.

FreeREG record page, quoted field by field in the page's own order. This is the ONLY William Stacey baptism transcribed anywhere in Hertfordshire 1808-1822 (16 Stacey and 0 Stacy baptisms read for those years), and Therfield's own register IS transcribed for the period with no Stacey entry at all - positive control: Therfield Smith baptisms 1810-1820 return eight rows. So the 1851 census's 'Therfield' has no baptism behind it, and this entry does.

Burial at Barkway of a workhouse inmate means the parish was her settlement.

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) Register Entry 20 · Date 23 Dec 1841 Primary

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) · Anglican · Barkway, Hertfordshire, England

For William Stacey & Charlotte Clamp

Marriage date | 23 Dec 1841 | Groom forename | William | Groom surname | STACEY | Groom occupation | Blacksmith | Groom abode | Barkway | Bride forename | Charlotte | Bride surname | CLAMP | Bride condition | Spinster | Bride abode | Newsells

The union itself. Until now this family carried unionType 'unknown' because no marriage had been found; this entry is why it becomes married with a start date, and it retires the two speculative FreeBMD references (Wisbech Jun 1839 vol 12 p.217, Biggleswade Dec 1840 vol 6 p.130) recorded on the earlier citation - neither is this couple.

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) Register Entry 226 · Date 11 Dec 1842 Primary

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) · Anglican · Barkway, Hertfordshire, England

For William Stacey & Charlotte Clamp

Person forename | Fanny Elizabeth | Person sex | F | Father forename | William | Mother forename | Charlotte | Father surname | STACEY | Mother surname | STACEY | Person abode | Barkway | Father occupation | Blacksmith

The parentage block of Fanny Elizabeth's own baptism. Her link to William and Charlotte previously rested on the 1851 census household alone, where the relationship words Father and Mother are stated relative to her; this is a baptismal register naming both parents, which is the stronger record for a parent link.

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) Register Entry 132 · Date 23 Feb 1840 Primary

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) · Anglican · Barkway, Hertfordshire, England

For John Dodkins & Mary Elizabeth Boulden

Father forename | John | Mother forename | Elizabeth Mary | Father surname | DODKINS | Mother surname | DODKINS | Person abode | Barkway | Father occupation | Shepherd

The parentage block of Thomas's baptism entry - this is the record that makes the parent link. Identity: three censuses (1851 Barkway, 1861 Bethnal Green, 1871 Huntspill) and his Cape probate all give his birthplace as Barkway, Hertfordshire, and c.1840/41; this is the only Thomas Dodkin(s) baptised at Barkway and the only Thomas Dodkin or Dodkins birth registered anywhere in England and Wales 1837-1846 (FreeBMD, 4 Dodkins and 29 Dodkin births read). The mother is written Elizabeth Mary here and in 1838 and 1846, plain Mary in 1835, 1842 and 1844, and Elizabeth Mary Ann in 1848; her marriage entry gives Mary Elizabeth Boulden.

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) Register Entry 35 · Date 18 Sep 1814 Primary

Barkway, St Mary Magdalene, parish register (Hertfordshire) · Anglican · Barkway, Hertfordshire, England

For Richard Stacey & Patience Guiver

Father forename | Richard | Mother forename | Patience | Father surname | STACEY | Mother surname | STACEY | Person abode | Barkway | Father occupation | Labourer

The parentage block of William's baptism, and the record that makes this parent link. It is corroborated independently by his own marriage entry of 1841, which names his father as Richard Stacey - so the link to Richard rests on two records, and Patience comes from the baptism plus the couple's own 1809 marriage. The father's trade differs between the two (labourer 1814, blacksmith 1841); twenty-seven years apart that is a career, not a contradiction, and it is the trade William and his son Oswald both followed.
