Identity: three censuses (1851 Barkway, 1861 Bethnal Green, 1871 Huntspill) and his Cape probate all give his birthplace as Barkway, Hertfordshire, and c.1840/41; this is the only Thomas Dodkin(s) baptised at Barkway and the only Thomas Dodkin or Dodkins birth registered anywhere in England and Wales 1837-1846 (FreeBMD, 4 Dodkins and 29 Dodkin births read). The mother is written Elizabeth Mary here and in 1838 and 1846, plain Mary in 1835, 1842 and 1844, and Elizabeth Mary Ann in 1848; her marriage entry gives Mary Elizabeth Boulden.

The father's trade differs between the two (labourer 1814, blacksmith 1841); twenty-seven years apart that is a career, not a contradiction, and it is the trade William and his son Oswald both followed.
