Townsville's gaol at North Ward was replaced by a new facility at Stuart, then known as Stewarts Creek; "the original spelling was 'Stewarts' Creek, but the spelling was changed in February of 1939 to 'Stuart' Creek", after district surveyor Clarendon Stuart (1833-1912).

"Fassifern Scrub was the initial name for the settlement around August Engels' stores, which later became known as Engelsburg. The name was changed to Kalbar in 1916 due to anti-German feeling." Fassifern Scrub Provisional School opened 3 Feb 1879 and was renamed Engelsburg State School on 4 Sep 1879.
