For “Occupation” FROM 1860 TO 1861 of Samuel Finch

Samuel Finch, Cottage of Content Inn, Braidwood

Read from the page image (media 408). One line of the list of publicans' licences granted at the annual licensing meeting held at the Court-house, Braidwood, on 17 April 1860. Trove's OCR of the same line reads 'Samuel Finch, Cottage of-Content Inn, Braidwood'; the hyphen is an OCR artefact and is not in the print. The list also carries 'John Stephens, Cottage of Content Inn, Larbert' — a second house of the same name in the same district.

The following year's list of applications duly lodged with the Clerk of Petty Sessions for the District of Braidwood, quoted from the Trove OCR (the break in 'Braid-wood' is the column break). Two consecutive years of licences is what makes innkeeping an occupation here rather than a single incident.

At her residence, Cottage of Content, Wallace Street, Braidwood, on the 24th inst., the wife of Mr. Samuel Finch of a daughter.

Read from the page image (media 407), where the print is clean. A birth notice, and the only record that gives the house its street: it ties the licensed inn of the 1860 and 1861 lists to the address at which Susannah died in 1864, 'her residence Wallace street, Braidwood'.

For Theresa Ada Finch (1862–1948)

At her residence, Cottage of Content, Wallace Street, Braidwood, on the 24th inst., the wife of Mr. Samuel Finch of a daughter.

The daughter is Theresa Ada. NSW birth registration 5851/1862 (district Braidwood, parents SAMUEL and SUSANNAH) is the only Finch birth registered to this couple in 1862, and the Drayton and Toowoomba cemetery index makes her 86 at her death on 30 July 1948, i.e. born between 31 July 1861 and 30 July 1862 — 24 February 1862 falls inside that. Her birth was previously recorded as the year only.
