The date and place come from his entry in the non-parochial registers surrendered to the Registrar General (TNA series RG 4-8), which record a date of birth; they are corroborated by the FamilySearch christening index and by the St Vincent passenger list of 1849, which gives his place of origin as Raleigh, Essex. He is NOT in the Rayleigh parish register: a full sweep of its seventeen transcribed Finch baptisms for 1790-1835 contains no child of a William and a Mercy, so the family were dissenters and the chapel has still to be identified.
