Free database of GEDCOM files uploaded by German researchers. Database 37144 (uploaded 4 September 2011 by Matthew Scharf) carries the Butzbach Grüninger and Knabenschuh families and cites, via MyHeritage smart matches, the 'Knabenschuh Web Site' tree of John L. Knabenschuh and the 'Kraus' tree of Leonie Kraus. A compiled tree, so quality 1 for its bare datasheets — but many of its person notes are dated transcriptions and translations of the Butzbach Markuskirche parish registers, given with volume, page and entry number (the compiler's working file 'KnButz-1 of 28 Apr 1998', translations initialled RTS, B.Heil, AH), and those are cited at quality 2. The site is served behind an Anubis proof-of-work bot check, which a script can solve; it is not a paywall.

For “Born” OCT 1838 of James Ernest Grenenger

birth 1838

His birth event has carried no citation at all since proposal 2228 created it. GEDBAS gives the year 1838 and no place. The place on the event, Frankfurt am Main, comes from his own 1886 naturalisation certificate ('a native of Frankfort a/M Germany'); WikiTree Grenenger-3 says Butzbach, 35 km north, and this German source is silent on the point. The conflict is unresolved and the place is left alone.

For “Born” 6 OCT 1833 of Wenzel Grenenger

Wenzel GRÜNINGER | Events: death 1911; birth 1833 | Parents: Johannes GRÜNINGER, Maria Sophia KNABENSCHUH

His birth event has carried no citation at all since it was created from the 1833 baptism. This adds one, and it is worth more than corroboration of the year: the German compilation records his DEATH as 1911, which is when Wenzel #82883 died at Burwood Road, Burwood. The family at Butzbach knew what became of him.

Kfam-214

Quoted as the compiler's transcription stands, run-on spacing and all; the slashes mark his line breaks. A CONFLICT INSIDE THE SOURCE: this detailed entry says she was baptised 'The 14th. of the same month', i.e. 14 October 1810, while the same person's summary note on the same page reads 'b. 11 Oct 1810 ... bap. 14 Nov 1810'. The detailed transcription is preferred and used for the date here — a Lutheran baptism three days after birth is ordinary and one a month later is not, and the summary line garbles other words in the same sentence ('Strumpfwebermeige'). The November reading is recorded here so the next reader can settle it from the register page itself.

For “Buried” 4 NOV 1879 of Maria Sophia Knabenschuh

Death $ 1879 November 2nd. of Maria Sophia Grüninger geb.Knabenschuh born 1810 October 11th. in Butzbach, the wife of deceased local gerber Johannes Grüninger IV. She died 1879 November 2nd. at 16:30 and was buried with Evangelical rights by the Pastor at 14 hours on 1879 November 4th., aged 69 years, 22 days.

Quoted as the transcription stands. The entry is internally self-checking: 11 October 1810 to 2 November 1879 is 69 years and 22 days exactly, which is what the register states, so the birth date and the death date corroborate one another. It also names her husband as a GERBER — a tanner — which is the trade both her emigrant sons carried on at Monkittee, Braidwood and Enfield in New South Wales.

For “Occupation” of Johannes Grüninger

the wife of deceased local gerber Johannes Grüninger IV

His trade, from the register entry for his wife's death in November 1879. Gerber = tanner. The same note adds 'Her husband Johannes died the previous June', which dates his death to June 1879; the person record carries the year only, because 'the previous June' is the compiler's summary rather than a quoted register line. This is the single most satisfying corroboration in the whole line: the Australian record has Wenzel advertising in 1864 as 'Tanner and Currier, Monkittee Hut' and his brother running a tannery at Braidwood, and here is their father, a tanner in Butzbach.

Married J. Grüninger [IV], 1830 January 31st. See record. … See Ref.5, p198, for marriage to Johannes Grüninger IV, Butzbach, 2 June 1830 ???; & their family of 4 children.

Quoted as the transcription stands, including the compiler's own '???' against the June date — that hedge is his, not mine. The same compilation states the conflict a third time in its summary line, '2 Jun 1830 (but Markuskirche Marriage Register says 31 Jan 1830)', and a fourth time in Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh's year-by-year history: '1830 Jan. 31st. His daughter Maria Sophia married Johannes Grunuger [iv]'. Three of the four readings say 31 January and one of those cites the marriage register itself, so 31 January 1830 is used and the June reading is recorded on this event's summary. Nine months later, on 24 June 1830, their first child was born.

Quoted as the transcription stands, ellipsis included — that gap is the compiler's, where the register named the poor-house committee. The age, 76 years 5 months 4 days on 5 June 1854, gives a birth on 1 January 1778 exactly, which is what the baptism entry says. His trade is given four different ways across the records the compilation quotes — Strumpfwebermeister, Strumpffabrikant, Strumpfweberfabricant and Stadtrechner — and the summary here carries all of them.

Quoted as the transcription stands. The compiler reads the first witness as Carl Zimmermann. He notes that none of the dead man's sons witnessed the funeral, because Johann Ernst had died in 1846, Christian was in London and Johann Heinrich was in Manhattan — worth recording as context for a family already producing emigrants a generation before the Grüninger brothers sailed for Sydney.

Freitag, previously the wife of Anton Winter, local burger and master stocking weaver ; and was buried on the 11th. of the same month [at 3 p.m.], publically and as per Christian rites.

Quoted as the transcription stands. The register's stated age, 49 years and 8 months, does not fit its own baptism entry: 12 February 1769 to 10 January 1819 is 49 years and 11 months. The register is wrong by three months, or the compiler has mistranscribed it; the baptism entry is preferred for the birth date and the discrepancy is recorded rather than smoothed. She died eight years and nine months before her daughter Maria Sophia married Johannes Grüninger, so Wenzel Grenenger never met this grandmother.

THE DOUBLE MARRIAGE. Johannes Grüninger married Maria Sophia Knabenschuh on 31 January 1830; three and a half years later HER brother Christian married HIS sister Johanna Katharina. A brother and sister marrying a sister and brother is a sibling-exchange marriage, and it is the strongest structural corroboration this German round has produced for proposal 2298: it puts a daughter of Johann Christoph Grüninger and Juliane Margarethe Preiss marrying into the same Knabenschuh household, in the same town, three years after Johannes did. The compilation's own transcription of the father-in-law's year-by-year history records both weddings: '1830 Jan. 31st. His daughter Maria Sophia married Johannes Grunuger [iv]' and '1833 Aug. 25th. At marr. of Christian [iii] & Anna Cath. Gruninger'.

The sibling set that carries the link. Wenzel's membership is proven independently by his 1833 Butzbach baptism naming Johannes and Maria Sophia, and by his 1911 NSW death registration naming JOHN and SOPHIA; the two sisters' by their 1830 and 1831 baptisms in the same register to the same parents. Johann Ernst is the fourth name on the same list. Corroborated on the Australian side by the NSW Government Gazette of 20 October 1876, p. 4219, which advertises the tanning partnership as 'Grenengers and Rappeneker' and is signed by both WENZEL and ERNST; by the shared trade, their father being a Gerber at Butzbach; and by both brothers arriving in 1857. This is still a compiled tree plus circumstance, not a record naming his parents — which is why it is proposed on its own and can be rejected without touching anything else.

THE PARENT LINK, and it is the weakest claim in this whole German round: a compiled tree's structure with no quoted register entry behind it, which is why it is proposed by itself. What supports it beyond the tree is the trade — his father a Rotgerber und Lohgerber, he himself 'the deceased local gerber' of the 1879 register — and the fact that Butzbach's FamilySearch index independently holds a 'Johanna Katharina Grüninger, bapt. 1809, parents Grüninger – Preiss', who is this couple's youngest child. The record that would settle it is his own baptism in the Butzbach Markuskirche register for 1805.

THE MAIDEN NAME. This tree has held her since proposal 2194 as a given name with an empty surname slot — 'Sophia' from her son Wenzel's NSW death registration 13941/1911, then 'Maria Sophia' from his 1833 Butzbach baptism. GEDBAS names her KNABENSCHUH. The identification is not a name match: this datasheet lists exactly the four children this family has — Anna Katharina 1830, Anna Juliana 1831, Wenzel 1833 and Johann Ernst 1838 — at Butzbach, and gives Wenzel's death year as 1911 and Johann Ernst's as 1918, which are the death years of Wenzel #82883 at Burwood and James Ernest #83016 at Goulburn. A German researcher's tree that knows when the two emigrant brothers died in New South Wales is tracking this family, not a namesake.

THE PARENT LINK THIS TREE HAS BEEN MISSING. Proposal 2228 created James Ernest as a standalone person and deliberately refused to attach him to Johannes and Maria Sophia, because his NSW death registration 12782/1918 carries an age ('8O YRS GOULBURN') and no parent columns, so nothing named his parents. This does. Two things make it more than a name match: the German compilation gives his death year as 1918, which is the year James Ernest died at Goulburn, and it gives his brother Wenzel's as 1911, which is the year Wenzel #82883 died at Burwood — a Butzbach household whose tree knows the death years of both Australian brothers. And the sibling set matches: this is the fourth and last of exactly the four children the family had. Note the ONE thing the source does not give him: a birthplace. His place is left as it was.

CORRECTED. My first reading of this page (proposal 2285) misread the GEDBAS spouses-and-children block, which puts the SPOUSE first and then the children, and reported Conrad August Sauerbier as a son. He is her husband. Her son is William Sauerbier, born 4 June 1857, and he is the only child recorded to them. The raw above is re-quoted with the block's columns labelled. Wenzel's eldest sister did not emigrate: she married at Butzbach in 1856 and died there in 1912, aged 81. Her identification as ours is unchanged and rests on her birth on 24 June 1830, ten days before the baptism on 4 July 1830 already in this tree from FamilySearch, to Johannes Grüninger and Maria Sophia.

Her husband, named from HIS page rather than hers — the cross-check that corrects proposal 2285's misreading of the layout on her page. She has one recorded child, William, born eleven months after the wedding, and no other.

For Friedrich Konrad Knabenschuh (1778–1854)

Friedrich Konrad KNABENSCHUH | occupation Strumpfwebermeister = Master Stocking Weaver | Events: death 5. June 1854 Butzbach, Oberhessen, Hessen; birth 1. January 1778 Butzbach, Deutschland; marriage 31. July 1803 Butzbach, Deutschland | Parents: Johann Christian KNABENSCHUH, Maria Christina LICHTENFELS | Children: 1. April 1804 Johann Ernst KNABENSCHUH; 3. May 1807 Christian KNABENSCHUH; 11. October 1810 Maria Sophia KNABENSCHUH

Maria Sophia Knabenschuh's father, and so Wenzel Grenenger's maternal grandfather. His own parents, Johann Christian Knabenschuh and Maria Christina Lichtenfels, are named here and by his baptism entry but are NOT created — a further generation for a later pass. Note that his page's own transcription of his baptism reads 'b. 1 Jan 1778, bap. 2 Jan 1775' — 1775 is plainly a slip for 1778, and the detailed entry says he was baptised on 2 January, the day after his birth.

Maria Katharina FREITAG | Events: death 10. January 1819 Butzbach, Deutschland; birth 12. February 1769 Butzbach, Deutschland; marriage 31. July 1803 Butzbach, Deutschland; marriage 3. June 1792 Butzbach, Deutschland | Parents: Johann Ernst FREITAG | Children (by Knabenschuh): 1. April 1804 Johann Ernst KNABENSCHUH; 3. May 1807 Christian KNABENSCHUH; 11. October 1810 Maria Sophia KNABENSCHUH | Children (by Anthon WINTER): 29. October 1794 Johannes WINTER; 6. September 1797 Andreas WINTER; 15. October 1799 Maria Catharina WINTER; 22. May 1801 Anthon WINTER

Maria Sophia Knabenschuh's mother. She was married twice: to Anton Winter, master stocking weaver, on 3 June 1792 (he died 20 April 1802), by whom she had four children, and to Friedrich Conrad Knabenschuh on 31 July 1803, by whom she had three. Her four Winter children are Maria Sophia's half-siblings and are NOT created here. A CONFLICT on the death date: the same page notes 'fm Ahnentafel received from Stadtarchiv Butzbach, #9 says died 2 Jan 1819', against the register transcription's 10 January. The register reading is used. Her father is given only as Johann Ernst Freitag, shoemaker; her mother's name is not in the baptism entry.

November 1809 Johanna Katharina GRÜNINGER

She died on 14 January 1810, eight weeks after the birth of her seventh child on 19 November 1809 — the pattern of a death in childbed or of its aftermath, and the one internal check this datasheet offers. Her father Heinrich Preiss is named but not created. The GEDBAS source line spells her 'Juliana Margaretha Press/Preiss', which is why Press is added as an aka.

Wenzel Grenenger's brother-in-law. His own page names his wife as Anna Katharina Grüninger and his son as William, which is the mirror of her page and is what settles the misreading corrected in this proposal. His parents, Johannes Sauerbier (1790-1848) and Anna Elisabeth Müller, and his grandfather Johann Georg Sauerbier (1752-1821), are named by the same database but are NOT created.

Wenzel Grenenger's nephew, born at Butzbach eleven months after his parents' marriage and dead there eighty-two years later — he never left the town. His seven children are named with exact dates but are NOT created; they are listed as widen candidates. Konrad August, born 24 March 1896, died in 1900 aged four.

A NAME TRAP, and the reason this citation exists at all. There are TWO Maria Sophia Knabenschuhs of Butzbach in this tree now. #82920, born 11 October 1810, is Wenzel Grenenger's mother. THIS one was born 11 June 1862, to Heinrich Knabenschuh and Catharina Hildebrand, and married Wenzel's nephew William Sauerbier in 1886 — fifty-two years younger, a different couple's daughter, almost certainly a cousin of the first. They must never be merged. The families had already intermarried once in 1830, and this is the second time in two generations.

April 1804 Butzbach, Deutschland; marriage 5. February 1833 Butzbach, Deutschland | Parents: Friedrich Konrad KNABENSCHUH, Maria Katharina FREITAG | Marriage 5. February 1833 Butzbach — spouse Carolina Helena Luisa ZAHN — children: 7. March 1838 Heinrich KNABENSCHUH

Maria Sophia Knabenschuh's eldest brother; Wenzel Grenenger's uncle. THE DATASHEET CONTRADICTS ITSELF and I have not carried its death date across. It gives a death of 12 February 1837 and a burial of 6 August 1846 — nine years apart — and a son born 7 March 1838, thirteen months AFTER the stated death. The 1837 date is therefore wrong. The compiler's own prose elsewhere in this database says 'Johann died in 1846', which agrees with the burial, so 1846 is recorded and the 1837 reading is quoted here rather than used. His wife Carolina Helena Luisa Zahn and their son Heinrich are named but not created.

May 1839 Marie Elisabethe KNABENSCHUH

Maria Sophia's other brother, and THE EMIGRANT OF HIS GENERATION: he left Butzbach for London and died at Finsbury in 1865. The compilation's note on his father says he 'was living in England: immigrated between 1851 & 1860' and was absent from the 1854 funeral for that reason. Place 6116 'Finsbury, Middlesex, England' is used rather than the source's anachronistic 'Greater London', which did not exist in 1865. His three children are named but not created.

Johann Christoph GRÜNINGER | Events: death 1808; birth 1803 | Parents: Johann Christopf GRÜNINGER, Juliane Margarethe PREISS

Named for his father and dead at five. He is worth noticing for a second reason: proposal 2298 declined to record a death of 13 April 1864 for the FATHER, Johann Christoph born 1763, because a hundred-year lifespan looked like a father-and-son conflation. This son cannot be the man who died in 1864 either, since he died in 1808 — so the 1864 death remains unexplained and the Butzbach burial register is still the way to settle it. No birthplace is given on his page.

The youngest of the seven and the only sister to reach adulthood. Her mother died on 14 January 1810, eight weeks after this birth. She is ALSO the row that independently strengthens proposal 2298's parent link: FamilySearch's Butzbach index holds a 'Johanna Katharina Grüninger, parents Grüninger – Preiss' baptised 1809, arrived at from a different direction entirely. She died at 31, two years after her last child.
