THE IDENTIFICATION: this is the only John Field x Mary marriage at Udimore in the searched window, and it precedes the three baptisms to a John and Mary in the same parish - William 1799, Sarah 1808 and John 1810, the last being Harriett Maria Field's father, whose own baptism entry (media 399) names his parents as John and Mary Field. Name, parish and the children's dates all agree, which is why the maiden name is taken at quality 3. CAUTION for anyone revisiting: record 2752629 has a John Field marrying Eleanor Bellingham at Udimore on 11 December 1794 - either a different man or an earlier marriage of this one; nothing is asserted about it here. WHERE MARY BROMLEY CAME FROM - A CHECKED NEGATIVE, 2026-09-08: Ancestry 62049 was searched for Bromley baptisms 1760-1790 and returned 203 rows across East Sussex, of which NOT ONE is in Udimore, Brede, Beckley, Peasmarsh, Icklesham, Northiam, Westfield, Rye, Winchelsea or Ewhurst. This marriage is the only Bromley record of any kind in those ten parishes. FreeREG agrees from the other side: a county-wide search of transcribed Sussex for Bromley 1750-1800 returns 19 rows, all at St Swithun and St Mary Magdalene (Michael x Susanna 1775-83, William x Elizabeth Wood 1800), and no Mary at all. So Mary Bromley was not born in her husband's district; she came into Udimore from somewhere else, and the parish she came from is the open question on this line. Kent is next door and is not covered by either collection.

WHY THIS IS ONLY QUALITY 2: nothing connects this child to the Keziah Noakes who married Thomas Crossingham at Rye on 3 August 1804 beyond a rare given name, a plausible age (23), and a parish eight miles away. Noakes was common in exactly this district - the same search returned Noakes households at Brede and Udimore under Thomas & Barbara (1768, 1771), David & Elizabeth (1767-73), Richard & Elizabeth (1767, married 1785), William & Elizabeth (married 1777), Thomas & Ann (1786), John (1802), George (married Elizabeth at Brede 26 June 1809), Henry (1812) and Samuel (1811). Her parents Thomas and Mary Noakes are therefore NOT entered in the tree; they belong here in the note until a record ties the Rye bride to the Ewhurst child. CHECKED AND EXCLUDED: 'Kezia Noakes | Baptism 18 Feb 1790 | Bishopstone/Bexhill | David, Mary' - she would have been 14 at the 1804 marriage. Note also that the George Noakes whose 1838 baptism entry sits beside Harriet Field's in Sussex is a generation later than the George who married at Brede in 1809, and is probably his son.

THE CHECKED NEGATIVE THAT KEEPS THIS IDENTIFICATION ALIVE. Every Kez*/Kes* Noakes baptism in Ancestry's pre-1813 East Sussex collection, the whole county, read in a signed-in browser by the orchestrator on 2026-09-08 and relayed in the form quoted: there are two, and only two. The 1790 Bishopstone girl is excluded on both age (fourteen at the 1804 Rye marriage) and distance (about forty miles west of Rye, the wrong side of the county). So no Keziah Noakes born about 1787-88 - the year her 1828 burial age of 40 implies - exists in the indexed record at all, and the burial age is the loose end rather than the baptism. ONE LIMIT ON THIS NEGATIVE, stated because it matters: the parent filter in that collection matches the row text rather than a parent field, and the check for a second Keziah to a Thomas x Mary was read on the first page only, 50 of 242 Noakes rows for 1781-95. A full page-through could still turn one up. WHAT WOULD ACTUALLY SETTLE IT: the Ewhurst burial register (not transcribed by FreeREG) for a Kesiah Noakes buried in Sussex before 1804, which would kill this identification outright, or the 1804 Rye marriage register image, which for a bride under 21 would name a consenting parent.

THE PAGE BEHIND IT HAS SINCE BEEN READ and is cited beside this row at quality 3, with the image as media 419 - the register reads July 8th Thomas Son of Richd. & Martha Crossingham, so the index is faithful. The collection keys the entry TWICE, which it also does for Richard sr's 1813 baptism, so two hits are one event. WHY THIS IS HIM: age 65 at his Icklesham burial on 5 December 1846 gives a birth about 1781; his parents' marriage at Icklesham was 17 January 1780; and no other Thomas Crossingham, Cressingham or Crassingham was baptised anywhere in FreeREG's Sussex transcription between 1750 and 1805. Bexhill explains why five earlier passes, all searching the Rye corner, missed it.

Nothing further is known of her: she does not appear on the 1838 James Pattison passenger list, so she did not emigrate with the family. A THIRD possible child, 'William Field | Baptism 26 Mar 1799 | John, Mary', is NOT created - the index shows no parish for it, so despite fitting fifteen months after the marriage it cannot be tied to Udimore. Other Fields at Udimore in these years, none connected here: Benjamin buried 8 May 1800, Edward married Ann 14 November 1809, and Ann, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth, baptised 26 January 1812 (that last entry is visible on media 399).
