CONFLICT, recorded rather than acted on. Age 36 in 1851 implies a birth about 1815, and the birthplace is given as Hawstead. Her Whepstead christening of 12 December 1819, her Kempsey West monument (aged 88 at 6 August 1908) and the Java passenger list ('Wepstead Suffolk') all agree on 1819 and on Whepstead, the adjoining parish; her own 1841 census entry gives her age as 20, which is closer to the baptism than to this. Four records against one, and the one is a wife's age and birthplace as given to an enumerator. Her birth date and birth place are left as they stand.

CANDIDATE, quality 2 — this is the basis for the birth year and birthplace now set on Henry, and the argument needs stating. His marriage register names his father Thomas; this is a Henry Cole of the right age with a father Thomas, at Tintinhull, which is the parish where Harriet Jane Meaker was in service in 1861. The household is Thomas Cole 49, born Ash, Somerset, agricultural labourer and carter, head; Mary Cole; and children Harriet, Ann, Sarah, Hester and Joseph. Rival Thomas-fathered Henry Coles in Somerset were checked and excluded: Kilton b. 1831/33 (still at Kilton in 1871 with a wife Charlotte), Cannington bapt. 6 Jan 1839 to Thomas and Judith, and Radstock bapt. 12 Jun 1842 to Thomas and Emily/Eliza. Henry's own baptism is not indexed, so no register entry confirms it. Read in the signed-in browser by the orchestrator on 2026-09-07.

The 1851 Barkway household, ark SGPJ-Y46: his line in the household list, then the fields of his own panel, quoted as relayed with the double bar marking where one ends and the other begins. 'Employg' is the enumerator's contraction, left as it stands. Therfield is about nine miles from Barkway.
