The three children's ages give births about 1845, 1847 and 1849, matching George, Caroline and Catherine on the 1853 Java passenger list and Catherine's Thingoe birth registration of the June quarter 1849. Robert's age 28 sits one year off his 25 August 1822 christening, which a March-night enumeration explains. Elizabeth's entry disagrees with her own baptism - see the citation on her record.

The 1851 Barkway household as listed against Fanny E Stacey's record, quoted as relayed; the words Father, Mother, Sister and Brother are stated relative to HER, which is what makes both the parent links and the sibling set. The marriage itself is not evidenced - absent from the FamilySearch Hertfordshire records, and the two plausible FreeBMD refs for a William Stacey (Wisbech 1839 Jun vol 12 p.217; Biggleswade 1840 Dec vol 6 p.130) were not tested against a Charlotte - so the union type stays unknown.

CONFLICT, recorded rather than acted on. Age 36 in 1851 implies a birth about 1815, and the birthplace is given as Hawstead. Her Whepstead christening of 12 December 1819, her Kempsey West monument (aged 88 at 6 August 1908) and the Java passenger list ('Wepstead Suffolk') all agree on 1819 and on Whepstead, the adjoining parish; her own 1841 census entry gives her age as 20, which is closer to the baptism than to this. Four records against one, and the one is a wife's age and birthplace as given to an enumerator. Her birth date and birth place are left as they stand.

CANDIDATE, quality 2 — this is the basis for the birth year and birthplace now set on Henry, and the argument needs stating. His marriage register names his father Thomas; this is a Henry Cole of the right age with a father Thomas, at Tintinhull, which is the parish where Harriet Jane Meaker was in service in 1861. The household is Thomas Cole 49, born Ash, Somerset, agricultural labourer and carter, head; Mary Cole; and children Harriet, Ann, Sarah, Hester and Joseph. Rival Thomas-fathered Henry Coles in Somerset were checked and excluded: Kilton b. 1831/33 (still at Kilton in 1871 with a wife Charlotte), Cannington bapt. 6 Jan 1839 to Thomas and Judith, and Radstock bapt. 12 Jun 1842 to Thomas and Emily/Eliza.
