FamilySearch's index to the Irish civil registers. An index only — names, dates, registration district and parents, not the register image. Its 'birth' date field is not always the date of birth: late registration was common and the indexed date can be the date of registration, which is why a baptism can appear to precede it. Individual records are addressed as https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:<ark>. Read signed in, in a browser. The register images themselves are at irishgenealogy.ie (source 1318).

For “Born” 1868 of Margaret Sullivan

Margaret Sullivan | Ireland, Civil Registration, 1845-1913 | Birth 1 December 1868 | Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland | Parents Michael Sullivan, Julia Collins Sullivan

The FamilySearch results-list row, quoted field by field, cited on the birth event it dates. The event holds the YEAR only: her Caheragh baptism was on 31 October 1868 and a baptism cannot precede a birth, so the indexed 1 December is almost certainly the date of registration.

For “Born” 22 SEP 1866 of Johanna Sullivan

Johanna Sullivan | Civil Registration | Birth 22 September 1866 | Skibbereen

The FamilySearch results-list row, quoted field by field, cited on the birth event. She was baptised at Caheragh the next day, 23 September 1866 — a one-day interval, which is what a real birth date looks like in this family and is the reason Margaret's indexed December date is read as a registration date.

For Michael Sullivan & Julia Collins

Patrick Sullivan | Civil | Birth Registration Skibbereen | Birth 2 March 1873 || John Sullivan | Catholic Parish Registers | Baptism 4 March 1873 | Caheragh

Two FamilySearch rows, both indexed to Michael Sullivan and Julia Collins, quoted field by field and separated by ||. CITED ON THE FAMILY AND NOT ON A PERSON, DELIBERATELY: two records two days apart cannot be told apart from an index. They may be one child whom the registrar entered as Patrick and the priest baptised John — common enough in west Cork — or twins, or the civil entry may be a second Patrick after the 1871 child died. Creating a person from either reading would risk either a duplicate or an invented name, so the family has a March 1873 child recorded here and no person row until the Caheragh register on registers.nli.ie is read.

For Margaret Sullivan (1868–1946)

Margaret Sullivan | Ireland, Civil Registration, 1845-1913 | Birth 1 December 1868 | Skibbereen, County Cork, Ireland | Parents Michael Sullivan, Julia Collins Sullivan

The FamilySearch results-list row, quoted field by field. This is where Margaret was born — the answer to three Australian negatives: no NSW birth to a Michael and Julia Sullivan 1864-74, no Queensland birth, no Victorian birth. The parents are the Michael Sullivan and Julia Collins of the Caheragh baptisms, and Collins is the maiden name her mother's own 1927 NSW death registration gives. HER BIRTH IS ENTERED AS 1868 ONLY, not as 1 December: her Catholic baptism was on 31 October 1868 and a baptism cannot precede a birth, so the indexed December date is almost certainly the date of registration. Her age of 77 at death in January 1946 agrees with 1868.

For Johanna Sullivan (1866–1941)

Johanna Sullivan | Civil Registration | Birth 22 September 1866 | Skibbereen

The FamilySearch results-list row, quoted field by field, indexed to Michael Sullivan and Julia Collins. Her Caheragh baptism the following day, 23 September 1866, is indexed separately in the Catholic parish registers — a one-day interval, which is what makes the 31 October baptism and 1 December civil date of her sister Margaret two years later look like a registration date rather than a birth date. Third of the five daughters.
