Brown employed Field to do a portion of the work. When it was completed Brown was paid in full, but he had not paid Field, and Mr. Plett was of opinion that he had acted very badly in withholding the money.

WILLIAM BROWN' and the report opens 'This was asuit brouglit to recover tho value of cfertain fencing done on Oxley Island, the Amount claimed being 3 Is. 9cL' - fencing done on Oxley Island. Judgment for the plaintiff for the whole amount. Puts John Field at work on Oxley Island in November 1866. Worth noting for the family: at the SAME sitting of the Taree bench, on 27 November 1866, the court heard 'RICHARD CROSSENGHAM: V. HENET MOSCATT' - Richard Crossingham, who had married John Field's daughter Harriett Maria ten years earlier.

For “Died” 25 AUG 1865 of Mercy Esther Field

Ceils Bubkt On Wednesday, the 23rd August last, Mercey Esther Field, daughter of John Field of 0*1 ey 'Island, was in company with two other children at the adjoining farm, where William Albmry, and George Cause were at work.

Quoted as the Trove OCR stands; the heading reads CHILD BURNT and the sentence 'Mercey Esther Field, daughter of John Field of Oxley Island, was in company with two other children at the adjoining farm, where William Albury and George Cruse were at work'. The report continues 'She lingered in great agony S3 hours audthep. expired' - thirty-six hours in the Maitland Mercury's cleaner reprint of the same paragraph a week later, which puts the death on 25 August 1865. WHY HER MOTHER IS LEFT UNKNOWN: the report names her father and not her mother, and she is NOT among the nine children the Australian Cemeteries Index lists for John Field and Margaret Ann Albury. A child of the first marriage would have been at least twenty-three in 1865, which does not fit a child playing with two others and wearing a tied hood, so Margaret Ann is much the likelier mother - but 'likelier' is not evidence, so the mother slot says unknown until a birth registration settles it.

Spelling 'Lansdown' as printed. Find a Grave names the 1866 daughter Lydia Amelia (Saville) Connors, whose Lansdowne headstone gives her age at death in 1944 as 77, consistent with an August 1866 birth.
