For John Edward Charles (1850–1930)
"T'he eldest son, Mr. J. E. Charles, is a railway employe at Young."
Trove OCR quoted as it stands; "T'he" is the OCR's rendering of "The" and "employe" of "employee". This is the sentence that establishes that this couple had an eldest son known by the initials J. E., living at Young, New South Wales and working for the railways, and alive in August 1898. The same notice ranks the other three sons second, third and youngest, which is what places him before Herbert Cole Charles, born 1857.
