In 1942 he joined the Australian Army and served in the 7th Field Ambulance, being discharged a year later with the rank of captain.

Wikipedia is preferred here over the parliamentary register, whose Military Service field reads "Royal Australian Army Medical Corps, World War I" — impossible for a man born in 1909 and evidently a slip for World War II. The tree already carries an Ancestry citation to the Australian WWII service records giving his age as 31.

He died of a heart attack at his holiday house at Mooloolaba in March 1964. He was accorded a state funeral and cremated at the Mt Thompson Crematorium.
