A pastoralist who gained his early experience at Stream Hill in the Illawarra, New South Wales, and in 1863 took up Marathon and Telemon stations near Hughenden and Fort Constantine near Cloncurry. He was later a partner in Devoncourt station on the Flinders, and in 1866 invested in Normanton copper and in the Normanton Quartz Crushing Company.
