Born about 1813 at Brede Minor (Little Brede), in the parish of Brede, Sussex, and baptised at Udimore church on 11 April 1813 - the Udimore register enters the family as "of Brede Minor". Compiled trees give the birth as 8 April 1813; that date carries no citation, so only the year is recorded here. This supersedes the Icklesham birthplace this row carried earlier, which was inferred from the 1838 Coromandel passenger list's "Ecclesham"; the family did move to Icklesham, but not until later that year. Their course through east Sussex: married at Rye in 1804 and baptising there in 1805; at Winchelsea in 1807; at Udimore from 1810, where his sister Martha was baptised on 25 November, and living at Brede Minor by April 1813; and at Icklesham by 5 August 1813, when Martha was buried there. His siblings Thomas (1817) and Harriot (1822) were baptised at Icklesham.

Baptised at Udimore, Sussex, the ceremony performed by J. Myers; the register's abode column reads "of this Parish" with "of Brede Minor" written beneath it, so the family were living at Brede Minor (Little Brede, in the adjoining parish of Brede) and came to Udimore church. The Brede register kept its own copy of the same event.

Married at Fairlight, Sussex, about four miles west of Icklesham (no place row in this tree). Their eldest son Richard was baptised at Icklesham three months later, on 9 February 1834. The date is settled at the 4th, not the 3rd, by the East Sussex Record Office typescript of the Fairlight marriages (media 420), where theirs is the first entry of the 1833 continuation. That typescript gives no conditions, no witnesses and no parish of residence for either of them - the Hastings entries below it carry Holy Trinity, HASTINGS and theirs carries nothing - and the original register has not been imaged.
