For “Married” 3 OCT 1765 of John Tills & Mary Haward

County: Essex; Place: St Osyth; Church name: St Peter and St Paul; Register type: Parish Register; Register entry number: 54; Marriage date: 03 Oct 1765; Groom forename: John; Groom surname: TILLS; Groom condition: widower; Bride forename: Mary; Bride surname: HAWARD; Bride condition: widow; Witness1: George JACKSON; Witness2: Susan SOUTHGATE; Notes: Licence. Both sign.

FreeREG record page. The groom is a widower, so Newton's 1766 baptism naming mother Elisabeth (a year after this marriage) is unexplained: a second John Tills or a transcription question; Newton is left where he is.

For John Tills (d. 1780)

County: Essex; Place: St Osyth; Church name: St Peter and St Paul; Register type: Parish Register; Register entry number: 54; Marriage date: 03 Oct 1765; Groom forename: John; Groom surname: TILLS; Groom condition: widower; Bride forename: Mary; Bride surname: HAWARD; Bride condition: widow; Witness1: George JACKSON; Witness2: Susan SOUTHGATE; Notes: Licence. Both sign.

The tree's birth of 1750 (uncited) cannot belong to this man: a widower marrying by licence in Oct 1765 would have been 15. Cleared rather than replaced: no record gives his birth. He is probably the John Tills who baptised Newton (24 Nov 1745), William (6 Mar 1747/8) and Mary (20 Jun 1756) with a wife Ann, but that is not proven, so it is not asserted here. The tree's 1750 may have come from the other John Tills (single, m. Ruth Day 26 Nov 1771), added separately in the companion proposal.
