The colony's first newspaper, 1803-1842, digitised on Trove. It printed the Colonial Secretary's weekly public notices verbatim, including the lists of certificates of freedom and tickets of leave granted — which makes it a contemporary government record of convict emancipation rather than mere reportage.

Read from the clipping PDF (media 402); the ellipses stand for the other ships and names in the list, and "/" for the line breaks between entries. The list is arranged by ship of arrival with "Ditto" repeating the heading, so the three Ditto lines after "Marquis of Wellington" all belong to that ship: John Barber is the fourth Marquis of Wellington man in the week's grants. The identification rests on the ship, not on the name: he is the only John Barber in this tree who came on the Marquis of Wellington, and 1828 is exactly fourteen years after his February 1814 sentence. A compiled family history dates the certificate 15 April 1828 and cites "Sydney Gazette 21 April 1828"; the notice itself is dated 19 April at the Colonial Secretary's Office and was printed on Wednesday 23 April.
