Volunteer transcription of the 1871 census enumerators' books, searched at https://www.freecen.org.uk/. A dwelling page gives every person in the household with relationship, marital status, age, occupation and birthplace, plus piece, enumeration district, folio, page and schedule. Created without a url because FreeCEN's single site address is shared by its other census years and would collapse them into one source row; each citation carries the deep link to its own dwelling page. Coverage is partial by county and year: Durham is transcribed for 1861, 1871 and 1891, and a nil for an untranscribed district is not evidence of absence.

The whole dwelling panel, one row per person in the page's own column order (Surname, Forenames, Relationship, Marital Status, Sex, Age, Occupation, Birth County, Birth Place), rows separated by ';;'. This is the record that holds the family together: husband, wife and six children under one schedule.

For Jane Bates (1829–1876)

FOGGON | Jane | Wife | M | F | 42 | | Durham | Tanfield

Same dwelling panel, columns Surname, Forenames, Relationship, Marital Status, Sex, Age, Occupation, Birth County, Birth Place; her Occupation cell is empty and is quoted as an empty field. Age 42 at 2 April 1871 gives a birth between April 1828 and April 1829. TANFIELD, County Durham is the first record of her birthplace. No Jane Bates baptism was found at Tanfield in FreeREG for 1824-1834, but Tanfield's register is only patchily transcribed for those years.
