For James Ernest Grenenger (1838–1918)

We regret to record the deatli bf Mr. Ernest Grenenger, former-, ly iof Braidwood, whidh took place in Goulburn on Friday la's't. … Etor many years he carried on a tannery business in this district, first at Monkittee and subsequently at Braid-, wood. This business 'he transfer* red some years ago to his son, Mr. F. E. Grenenger, owing to failing healtlh. Prior to going- into the tannery business tihe Idecea-) sod was engaged in mining at Ara--lueu in the early days of this rich field. He was within a couple of months of t-eing 80 years Iof iage, over 50 of whidh he spent in this district. Be leaves four sons and five daughters to mourn his loss. The funeral took place at' Gone HrllW Saturday last.

Obituary, quoted as the Trove OCR stands; I read the mangled words as 'the death of Mr. Ernest Grenenger, formerly of Braidwood, which took place in Goulburn on Friday last', 'For many years', 'the deceased was engaged in mining at Araluen', and 'The funeral took place at Gore Hill'. 'Within a couple of months of being 80' in August 1918 gives a birth in October 1838, which is what the date on this record uses. He was at Monkittee, the same locality where Wenzel advertised as a tanner and currier in 1864.

For Elizabeth Brown (1841–1912)

MRS. GRENEGER, the wife of Mr. Ernest Grenenger, of the Braidwood Tannery, died in Sydney on Saturday morning last. … She leaves a husband and family of five sons and three daughters. Mrs. J. Turn-bull, her eldest daughter and some member' of her family went to Sydney on Saturday. The deceased lady was the daughter of the late Mr. S. Brown, of Reidsdale, and was a native of that place. … she having lived over the allotted span of life, three score years and ten.

Obituary, quoted as the Trove OCR stands. 'died in Sydney on Saturday morning last' — the paper is Wednesday 17 January 1912, so the Saturday is 13 January 1912, which the Ryerson Index confirms ('Elizabeth GRENENGER | DEAT | 13JAN1912 | 71 | at North Sydney, late of Braidwood'). Her father is the Stephen Brown of the golden-wedding notice.

For Wenzel Albert Grenenger (1878–1950)

From far-off Nyasaland comes news of an old Braidwoodite, Mr. Wenzel Grenenger, who sends a card to the 'Dispatch' editor conveying Christmas greetings and good wishes. His many friends in the district will be .pleased to learn that. Wenzel is still in the land of the living. He was educated at Braidwood public school and later served_in the Boer War, after which he remained in South Africa, running a plantation, we believe. He visited Braidwood once since, so far as we can learn, In about the year 1002. A brother, Fred, was Mayor of Braidwocd at one time. He conducted a tannery on. the creek just below Mr. J. Grigg's residence for some years.

Quoted as the Trove OCR stands; '1002' is 1902 and 'Braidwocd' is Braidwood. It places him as a Braidwood boy, a Boer War soldier who stayed on in southern Africa, and names his brother Fred — F. E. Grenenger, Mayor of Braidwood, who ran the family tannery. That is the same Fred named in their father James Ernest's 1918 obituary, which says 'another son is in South Africa'. Between 1903 and 1906 the Braidwood papers printed his letters home from Masumba Wa Nkasi and Deda in Central Angoniland, British Central Africa, addressed to 'his parents' — James Ernest and Elizabeth, who were living at Braidwood.

For Wenzel Albert Grenenger (1878–1950)

In a letter to the 'Dispatch' editor, Mr. Fihil Smith, of 47 Retreat Road, Hampton, 67, Victoria, who is a brother of Mrs. McCarron, of Bendoura, snvjt thnt. he rpatl of the death of Mr. W. A. Grenenger, of Nyassaland, In the. 'Dispatch' of 3rd November, ana asks to be furnished with the address of the late Mr. Grenenger's brothers and sister, if they are still alive. Mr. Smith says that he and Wenzel Grenenger were pals in their young days and went to South Africa together to the Boer War.

Quoted as the Trove OCR stands; I read 'snvjt thnt. he rpatl' as 'says that he read'. This is the death notice trail: W. A. Grenenger of Nyasaland, reported in the Dispatch of 3 November 1950, with a Boer War comrade writing in six weeks later for the surviving siblings' addresses. It ties the initials W. A. to the Wenzel Grenenger of the 1944 item and to the registration 999999/1950.
