Certificates issued to non-British subjects who wished to hold land or vote in New South Wales; the certificate states the applicant's native place, age, occupation, ship and year of arrival, and years of residence. Ancestry, signed in, in a browser — it refuses scripted requests. Absence of a certificate is not evidence a man was not German: many never applied.

For “Immigrated” 1857 of James Ernest Grenenger

arrived in the Colony of New South Wales by the Ship 'James Payne' in the year 1857 and who has resided in the said Colony for 28 years

The only statement of arrival for any Grenenger. There is NO Gren* arrival in the NSW assisted immigrant lists 1828-1896 (Ancestry collection 1204, read in Chrome), so the brothers came unassisted, or landed at Melbourne — the 'James Baines', if that is the ship, was a Liverpool-Melbourne clipper. '28 years' residence in 1886 points to 1857-58 and is consistent.

CERTIFICATE OF NATURALIZATION … application to be naturalized has been made by Ernest Grenenger a native of Frankfort a/M Germany aged 45 years, who is a Tanner and arrived in the Colony of New South Wales by the Ship 'James Payne' in the year 1857 and who has resided in the said Colony for 28 years … GIVEN under my Hand and Seal, at Government House, Sydney … this twenty-second day of January One thousand eight hundred and eighty-six. Carrington.

Certificate image read in Chrome by the orchestrator on 2026-09-07 (NRS 1040 Registers of Certificates, 1886, certificate no. 440, image 30516_081740-00524); the transcription is theirs, and the ship's name is their reading — it may be the Liverpool-Melbourne clipper 'James Baines'. The index entry gives BirthYear abt 1841, CivilAge 45, BirthPlace 'Frankfort AM, Germany', ArrivalDate 1857, CivilDate 22 Jan. 1886. The certificate's age implies a birth about 1840-41, while his obituary and death registration both say 80 years in August 1918; the obituary is preferred here.

His birthplace, from his own certificate: Frankfurt am Main. Frankfurt is about 35 km from Butzbach, the town the WikiTree profiles give for both brothers, so the two statements are consistent — but the certificate does not say Butzbach, and Wenzel #82883 has no certificate of his own in this series (Gren*, Gro* and Kren* with given name Wenzel all searched).
