FreeREG baptism transcript read 2026-09-07, quoted field-by-field in FreeREG's own column order (name, date, church, father, mother, reference). The record also carries fatherOccupation 'Labourer' and abode 'Icklesham'. This is the baptism of the Richard born 11 Jan 1834; his brother Peter was baptised in the same register on 29 May 1836 to the same parents.

FreeREG baptism transcript, Icklesham All Saints, quoted in FreeREG's own column order; the record also carries fatherOccupation 'Carpenter' and abode 'Icklesham'. This is Thomas and Kezia's son Thomas - the brother who sailed on the Coromandel aged 21. The same couple baptised a daughter Harriot there on 4 February 1822 (entry 200, father a Labourer). No baptism for Richard sr himself appears in the Icklesham transcript, consistent with the Brede birth WikiTree gives him; Brede is not transcribed in FreeREG.

Read with the FamilySearch rows relayed 2026-09-07, this household is traceable across three adjoining Sussex parishes: married at Rye 3 August 1804; Mary christened at Rye 10 March 1805; Eliza at Winchelsea 9 August 1807; Martha buried at Icklesham 5 August 1813; Thomas christened at Icklesham 8 June 1817 (this row, father a carpenter); Harriot at Icklesham 4 February 1822 (father a labourer). Richard, born about 1813, falls between the 1813 burial and the 1817 baptism; his own baptism is indexed in NEITHER FreeREG nor FamilySearch, which is the outstanding gap in this line.

The source of his birth year: age 65 at burial in December 1846 gives a birth about 1781, which fits a marriage at Rye in August 1804 at about 23. No baptism has been found for him — see the note on the 1780 marriage citation. The death date is entered as BEF 5 DEC 1846 because the register gives the burial, not the death; the note implies he died only days before.

A LEAD, NOT A LINK. Thomas was born about 1781 (his 1846 burial age) and there is exactly one Crossingham household at Icklesham in that decade: Richard Crossingham, labourer, who married Martha Simmonds there on 17 January 1780 and baptised Willm. Simmonds Cressingham on 18 July 1784 (buried 7 November 1784) and Mart[ha] Cressingham on 25 February 1787, both entered under the CRESSINGHAM spelling. Thomas named a daughter Martha (1810) and a son Richard (1813). But NO baptism for a Thomas Crossingham or Cressingham exists anywhere in FreeREG's Sussex transcription between 1765 and 1800 - and the Icklesham baptism register IS transcribed for those years, since the 1784 and 1787 entries are in it - so nothing names Thomas's parents and none are proposed. A LEAD, NOT A LINK, and the other half of the note on the 1780 marriage citation. A Richard Crossingham of Icklesham was buried aged 88 five months after Thomas, so born about 1758-59 - which would make him about 21 at the 1780 marriage to Martha Simmonds. FreeREG has a Richard Crossingham baptised 29 December 1758 at St Clement Old Town, Hastings, to Thomas Crossingham and Susanna, whose other children there were Thomas (1749/50), Henry (1750/51), Samuel (1752), Sarah (1753) and, at St Margaret, Mary (1752) and James (1757). That would be two further generations, and it rests on nothing but an age, so none of it is entered.
