The inscription as cut on the photographed marker, line by line, including the full stops the cutter used after the years. Both of John's dates match the tree to the day, and the stone names his wife Rebecca Scobie (#6836), which is the discriminator against other John Fergusons of North Gower — a name common enough in this district that the 1818 Perth elders' list holds two of them.

Re-examined the photographed marker (media 193, Find a Grave memorial 132910622, Elmview Cemetery, Kars, plot L60) directly this session via /api/media/193/raw: the stone clearly reads 'DIED AUG. 28. 1940' for Rebecca, one day later than the tree's previous, uncited 27 AUG 1940. Her birth date on the stone matches the tree exactly. First flagged by Helen from a description of the stone; independently confirmed here by viewing the image.
