Earlier records give the name as "Schonquell", but from 1854 it was officially Schoenborn, derived from "beautiful spring" or "beautiful mountain". The pioneer families went from Port Adelaide to Blumberg (Birdwood), thence to Neu Mec'kelberg (Gomersal), before settling here.
