transcript

Volunteer transcript of the register, not the register image; consulted 2026-08-29 through freereg.org.uk. Coverage of Wymondham baptisms is dense from the 1790s to the 1850s; many entries appear twice because two transcribers covered the same page, which is not two children. No source-level url is set because every FreeREG parish shares one search address; the per-entry deep links are on the citations.

Transcript columns quoted in order: name, event, date, church, father, mother, father's occupation, abode, register entry number (abode and entry number are present on some transcriptions of an entry and not others). Six of the nine children of family 4729 - William, Robert, Eleanor, Adeline, John and Henry - are recorded in the tree as baptised at Wymondham on 17 SEP 1837, and the register holds exactly that mass baptism, entries 674 to 680, every one of them a child of James HOWES, weaver, and Ann, of Lizard in Wymondham. Entry 679 is a seventh child James, who is not in the tree. George Howes, born 20 JAN 1841 in the tree, is entry 968 baptised 1 Feb 1841 to the same couple at the same abode, which extends the identification past the mass baptism. The mother's maiden name comes from an 1822 baptism of an earlier daughter Catherine to the same James Howes, weaver, where the transcriber recorded her as Ann BORRETT; a second transcription of that same entry reads Ann BORRELD. This independently confirms the tree's own Ancestry citation on all nine children, 'Record for Ann Borrett'. Nothing here is a marriage record, so unionType is left 'unknown'.

For James Howes

"Adeline Howes, baptism, 17 Sep 1837, Virgin Mary and St Thomas a Becket, James HOWES, Ann, Weaver, entry 677"

Named as the father in this and six other entries of the same mass baptism. His occupation, weaver, and his abode, Lizard in Wymondham, are what separate him from at least three other James Howes fathering children at Wymondham in the same years (by Susannah of Damgate, by Rebecca of Suton, and by Sarah Tink). No dates of his own are asserted; the register gives none.

Wymondham, Virgin Mary and St Thomas a Becket, Norfolk: parish registers Date 10 May 1822 Primary

For Ann Borrett

"Catherine Howes, baptism, 10 May 1822, Virgin Mary and St Thomas a Becket, James HOWES, Ann BORRETT, Weaver, Damgate"

The 1837 mass-baptism entries give the mother only as 'Ann'. This 1822 baptism of an earlier daughter to the same James Howes, weaver, supplies the maiden name. A duplicate transcription of the identical entry reads 'Ann BORRELD'; I have used BORRETT because it is the reading that also matches the tree's own Ancestry citation. BORRELD is worth recording as a name variant if a moderator wants it added as a name row.
