- Member for Gympie, Queensland Legislative Assembly FROM 28 MAR 1896 TO 11 MAR 1899Elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the seat of Gympie at the 1896 colonial election, standing as a Ministerialist and defeating the sitting member Andrew Fisher, later Prime Minister of Australia. He retired after a single term in 1899, citing his business interests and his frustration with what he called the growing tendency to make the Legislative Assembly a mere House of Talk.
