Began work as a jackaroo in 1859 and drove flocks north to Barcaldine in Queensland in the early 1860s. He was overseer of Alice Downs and then manager of Wilby, entered the Cameron-Crombie pastoral partnership, and from 1881 ran Kensington Downs, north-east of Longreach, with his mother. He was also chairman of Morehead Ltd, of the Queensland Meat Export and Agency Co and of the Alliance Insurance Co, and a director of the Queensland National Bank.
