Gowrie Scrub, Queensland, Australia

Historical place city -27.450, 151.867

Succeeded by Glencoe, Queensland, Australia — map location from the modern place

The Gowrie scrub: scrub country on the old Gowrie run north-west of Toowoomba, thrown open for homestead selection under the Land Act of 1875 and taken up largely by German selectors. Contemporary usage pairs it with Glencoe ('Mr. Mathias Schefe of Gowrie Scrub, Glen coe', Darling Downs Gazette 1894; the 'selectors In tho Gowrie Scrub' petitioning over Glencoe School, 1883), the district's dead being buried at Meringandan. Linked to present-day Glencoe as the successor name; coordinates inherited from it.

We regret very much to have to record the death, on Wednesday morning, of a very old resident, Mrs. Schefe, widow of the late Mr. Mathias Schefe of Gowrie Scrub, Glen coe.

Places Gowrie Scrub in the Glencoe district; the same notice calls the couple 'one of the pioneers of the Glencoe district, having settled there when the place was veritably a scrub' and has her buried at Meringandan. 'Glen coe' is the newspaper's spacing.
