Jim was born on his parents' homestead, with a Mrs McArthur as midwife. He attended Inglesfield School District No. 154 and, irregularly, Fairfield School District No. 46, five miles away across the Pipestone River; rheumatic fever at ten kept him in bed for most of a year, and he left school at twelve. At 18 he began working the NE quarter of section 30 of his father's second homestead, breaking 3 acres in 1904 and 45 in 1905 and cropping all 48 in 1906; he was recommended for patent on 4 October 1906.
He and Lottie built a brick home costing $3,300. Their first son died at birth and six children followed. He attended the Knights of Pythias and belonged to the D.O.K.K. Lodge of Saskatchewan. The couple wintered with relatives in Ontario, retired to Brandon and later to Central Park Lodge, where they marked their 65th wedding anniversary on 24 March 1974. He died aged 90 and was buried in Fleming Cemetery.
