Elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the seat of Gympie at the 1896 colonial election, standing as a Ministerialist and defeating the sitting member Andrew Fisher, later Prime Minister of Australia. He retired after a single term in 1899, citing his business interests and his frustration with what he called the growing tendency to make the Legislative Assembly a mere House of Talk.
