Held the Legislative Assembly seat of Toombul continuously from 10 April 1893 to 8 May 1926, succeeding Michael Gannon and being succeeded by Hugh Russell. Over that period the register records his affiliations changing from Ministerialist to Opposition, back to Ministerialist, then Liberal, Nationalist and finally the Queensland United Party (Nationalist and Country Party). In July 1925 he announced he would retire at the 1926 election and did not contest it.
