After his army appointment was terminated in 1942 Katter returned to Cloncurry, in north Queensland, where his family ran a general store. He leased a clothing store and later a picture theatre. The Parliamentary Handbook records his occupations as theatre proprietor and business manager. On taking over the cinema he removed the steel partitions that had divided Aboriginal patrons from other patrons.
