- FROM 24 DEC 1939 TO 1945 — **Australian High Commissioner to Canada**: [Thomas William Glasgow](/p/thomas-william-glasgow-65154.md) — Appointed the first Australian High Commissioner to Canada, arriving in Ottawa late in March 1940. His work included negotiation on the Empire Air Training Scheme, and he regularly visited the camps and schools where Australians were training, establishing Anzac clubs in Ottawa and Halifax. He advocated closer liaison on Pacific strategy, oversaw the Australia-Canada mutual aid agreement concluded in March 1944, and attended the 1943 and 1944 Quebec conferences between Churchill and Roosevelt. The University of Manitoba awarded him an honorary LL.D. in 1942. He returned to Australia in 1945.
