- FROM 1860 TO 1866 — **Occupation (Pastoralist)** at Queensland, Australia — One of the many young men attracted to Queensland in 1860 by the pastoral boom, Mosman was left penniless after the slump of 1866 and the contraction of the northern and western pastoral frontier.
- 1871 — **Occupation (Prospector)** at Ravenswood, Queensland, Australia — Like other broken squatters Mosman turned to prospecting, basing himself on the newly-discovered Ravenswood field.
- 24 DEC 1871 — **Discovery of the Charters Towers goldfield** at Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia — Prospecting the country west of Ravenswood with George Clarke and James Fraser, and looking for missing horses, Mosman's party found gold. His eleven-year-old Aboriginal servant Jupiter found promising traces of gold at a place which Mosman named Charters Tors (Towers) in honour of the mining warden W. S. E. M. Charters. The find was reported in January 1872 and stimulated a rush which founded north Queensland's richest goldfield. Mosman was one of the social lions of Charters Towers and the main street was named after him.
